Squarespace 7.0 background videos play on mobile

Background videos on Squarespace 7.0 websites do not play on mobile. This Squarespace plugin will make your background videos play on mobile devices.

Plugin need-to-knows

• This version of the plugin is for Squarespace 7.0 Brine family templates. You can check your version of Squarespace by logging into your website and click HELP in the left-hand menu. The version will be shown at the bottom. In 7.0 you can check which template you’re using by going to Website > Design > Template.
• The plugin only works with videos hosted on Vimeo. I have not bothered to configure the plugin to work with Youtube videos because they look terrible as background videos (covered in Youtube branding etc). Currently, a paid subscription to Vimeo is required to be able to use videos as backgrounds.
• You must have the Business Plan or higher to be able to add the custom code required.
• On iOS there is a feature that disables auto-playing videos if the phone is in low power mode. This cannot be avoided.
• The video playing is still subject to a good network connection.
• The plugin is built for videos that are the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. If you need to use it for a video in a different aspect ratio, let me know and I’ll explain how to tweak the custom code.

How to use the plugin

After purchase you will receive the plugin code and instructions as a text file by email. Installing the plugin is simply copying and pasting.

The plugin enables you to use background videos as normal. So you paste the video link in to Squarespace and optionally upload a fallback image. The video will cover the background of the section you’ve added it to.

Why no demo? Simply to protect myself because if someone has knowledge of javascript and developer tools, they could steal the plugin from the demo site without paying for it. I know you want to see the plugin working, so that’s why I have the video demoing the plugin above. If you have any other questions beyond what is shown in the video, feel free to contact me.

• If there is an issue with the plugin I will provide 30 days support from the date of purchase.
• If the plugin does not work due to other custom code you’ve added (which is unlikely if your other custom code works correctly) I will need to quote for time to investigate and fix the issue.
• Because the plugin is a digital download, I cannot offer a refund, but please let me know if there are any issues. I will be fair and accommodating.
• The plugin is allowed to be used on one website per purchase.
• You are not allowed to give away or sell this plugin under any circumstances.
